FAQ

What is the difference between rafters and shade slats (purlins)?

  • Rafters are the larger, primary boards that form your pergola's main structure, providing its overall strength and shape.
  • Shade Slats (Purlins) are the smaller boards running across the top of the rafters to add extra shade and a finished look.

What are pergola requirements?

To maximize the performance of your Apollo System, a slight slope is required. We recommend a minimum 4% slope, which equates to a 1-inch drop for every 24 inches of length.

How to add slope to your pergola?

If your pergola roof is flat, lateral shims offer an easy way to add the necessary slope for proper water runoff and optimal Apollo system performance.

What is your Snow Load recommendations?

The Hercules System is rated for snow loads up to 50 PSF when purlins are spaced 23″ or less. For comparison, most home roofs are rated between 20–30 PSF.

What is your Wind Safety recommendations?

The Hercules System is rated to withstand wind speeds up to 139 mph when installed correctly. For best performance, make sure your purlins are spaced less than 19″ apart and the cover is secured to the structure with screws (not nails).

How to Modify Your Pergola

  • Slope + Rafters Only

To prepare your structure for installation, you can either install purlins over the rafters or add blocking between them. Both methods are equally effective, so choose the one that matches your design preference. We advise against moving the existing rafters; over time, rafters can sag or bow, and adding purlins or blocking provides necessary structural reinforcement. Furthermore, shifting rafters can split or damage the wood, potentially requiring costly replacements.

  • No Slope + Rafters Only

To create the necessary pitch for your system, we highly recommend using lateral shims. These function similarly to shade slats or purlins by running perpendicular to your rafters. By gradually decreasing in height, they easily and effectively build the slope your roof cover requires, ensuring a simple and hassle-free installation.

  • No Slope + Purlins

To build the correct pitch for your cover, you can utilize either lateral shims or doorstop shims. Both methods are highly effective at creating the required slope—the choice simply comes down to your visual preference for the finished look.
